Housing Opportunity Program (HOP)
When making any decision, it’s always nice to know all of your options. That’s the objective of CHAC’s Housing Opportunity Program---to make sure that families with vouchers explore all of their housing options. There are more than 77 neighborhoods in Chicago, and families with vouchers may choose to live in any one of them. Opportunity Neighborhoods, those where less than 24 percent of the population has income below the poverty line, are particularly attractive areas, especially for families with children. Families who move to Opportunity Neighborhoods often find better schools, less crime and better amenities such as transportation, recreational facilities and shopping.
It’s not easy to move to a new community, but nothing worthwhile ever is. CHAC’s Housing Opportunity Program has helped thousands of families with vouchers successfully relocate to Opportunity Neighborhoods. Families who volunteer for the program are assigned to a housing counselor that supports them every step of the way. The housing counselor helps families assess their needs in terms of neighborhood and housing, assists them with housing search, and even provides post-move support to help families adjust to their new neighborhood.
Other services include:
- Neighborhood tours
- Transportation to view units
- Free credit check
- Tenant education, including workshops on landlord/tenant law, household budgeting and tips on filling out rental applications
There is even a security deposit loan fund for families who move from a high-poverty neighborhood to a low-poverty neighborhood.
