Frequently Asked Questions

How does a family participate in the Chicago Housing Choice Voucher Program?
Each month, CHA calls families from a waiting list and screens them for program eligibility. Families who meet the income guidelines are issued vouchers, which entitle them to have a portion of their rent subsidized.

How can I get on the waiting list?
Earlier this year, the Chicago Housing Authority opened the lottery for the Chicago Housing Choice Voucher Program waitlist.  The deadline to register was May 15, 2008.  All of the names of individuals who completed the required questions and submitted a registration form between April 18 and May 15, 2008 were entered into an electronic lottery in which a computer randomly selected the names of 40,000 individuals and randomly assigned them a position on the Chicago Housing Choice Voucher Program waitlist.

If you did not register for the lottery between April 18 and May 15, 2008, your name was not added to the lottery and you are not eligible for the waitlist.

I am on the waiting list. How do I find out my status?
When a family’s application number reaches the top of the list, they are notified by mail. That’s why it’s extremely important for families who are on the waiting list to advise CHAC in writing of their new address every time they move. Families and individuals can find out their status by writing to CHAC at P.O. Box 1406 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1406 to the attention of the Waiting List Administrator. Always include your full name, date of birth and social security and registration numbers on any correspondence to CHAC.

How will I know if I was selected for the waitlist?
Everyone who submitted a registration form for the lottery will receive a letter notifying them whether or not they have been placed on the waitlist.  The letter to the 40,000 individuals selected for the Wait List will include a registration number because they will be called from the list in order and have the opportunity to apply for the voucher program.  Those who meet the qualifications will be issued vouchers to search for a house or apartment to rent in the private market.

How do landlords participate in the program?
Owners who have a property for rent should advertise it the way they normally advertise it. Families will contact you directly. If a family with a voucher passes your screening process, then CHAC will call you to schedule an inspection. That’s how the majority of owners start the process. Owners can also begin the process by listing a property right now.

Does the program screen families before issuing them vouchers?
Families and individuals are issued vouchers based on income guidelines, not based on their suitability as tenants. Owners are strongly encouraged to screen all prospective tenants-voucher holders as well as market tenants.

Why are units required to pass an inspection?
All units must pass annual inspections to make sure that they meet a minimum set of health and safety requirements established by HUD. The inspection process is based on premise that government funds should not subsidize substandard housing and that all families regardless of their income have a right to live in housing that is safe, decent and sanitary.

What is the cost to participate in the voucher program?
It has come to our attention that people have attempted to sell housing vouchers and applications for vouchers. This is a reminder that you should NEVER pay for such services. It is illegal for anyone to require money for ANY services provided by the Chicago Housing Choice Voucher Program, including obtaining an application or voucher and placement on the waiting list. If anyone asks you for money for these services, notify CHA immediately, by contacting our call center at 312.935.2600.
